My BF just sent me this article. I think it's great.

We often have discussions about where we buy food, and how much we spend. It's not an issue for us (in our house) so much, but we share meals with so many friends and "family" that sometimes it seems like one for others. One of the things taken for granted, because it's the SFGate, is that in NoCal access is relatively easy. Our friends in Davis usually have stuff growing all year. In Wisconsin we have the reality of winter, and consequentially Gaia's dormancy.
Anyway, enjoy!

Re: Budget Foodies
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 10:40 PMReading this I realized - that's how I've been living for years now! And like Jane in the article it's all do to not havinga choice, but being dictated by my finances. My fiance and I have a budget of $300/month (total for both of us) and we do fine - mostly organic produce and only organic meat and dairy. We keep track of spending on the fridge white board. We get a delivery from a CSA for $30 every other week and that lasts just about until the next delivery and it's a mix of local fruit and veggies which I get to choose and I buy the rest (mainly meat) in large quantities and freeze. I guess years of me and then my fiance being students forced me to shop wisely - food needs to be flexible. I rarely buy ingredients that can only be cooked 1 way and buy things that can be combined in several different ways. I crockpot often for our lunches and cook our dinners (it helps save time spent in the kitchen).
