I knwo we are food geeks and our tastes run far of field but when you're alone and just making a simple hand meal(if you prefer that term to sandich as some do)
What do you like best? remember it's to be a simple one no more elaborate than a philly cheese steak.
for me it's tri-tip roasted/smoked over mesquite leftover from last nights cookout, sliced thin with havarti cheese, tomato slices, aoli, radish sprouts and avocado on thick slced marble rye toast. (and bacon if there are a couple rashers left over from breakers.)

Sun, October 7, 2007 - 12:06 PMOn a crusty toasted roll slathered with a spicy sriracha mayo mix (when talking to the snotty I call it Vietnamese aioli) - loads of sauteed mushrooms, onions and crunchy lettuce. -

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 2:16 PMleftover turkey on a sweet roll with mayo and cranberry sauce.
In fact, during Thanksgiving, I generally forgo the turkey dinner and head straight for the sammich :) -

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 8:36 AMi make my own vietnamese sammiches - a simple and delicious lunch for work too. :)
i've got a spicy garlic spread that i like to put on sourdough and make grilled cheese with a little parmasan and mild cheddar. very simple, but the flavors are so distinct and work well together.
a strange craving that i get from time to time is a pickle, peanut butter and mayo sandwich. i know. sounds gross, but my sweetie used to eat it as a kid and every now and then it hits the spot. same thing with butter and sugar sandwiches on leftover hoagies or french bread. my mom used to make them when i was a kid.

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 9:54 AMSo many options.... Though I eat very little meat these days, leftover roast or sausage sandwiches are always delicious. If it's roast turkey then stuffing in the sandwich and cranberry sauce are mandatory. Real baguette (hard crispy on the outside and soft inside) with brie, sliced pear or apple, and Dijon mustard (maybe a few pine nuts or walnuts thrown in). Or, bubble and squeak on toasted bread with ketchup (bubble and squeak is left over veggies pan fried until they bubble and squeak and start getting crispy and there's lovely little crispy bits throughout)...that one is perhaps an acquired taste...a bit like the Vegemite with lettuce or cucumber is (white bread necessary).

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 11:21 AMFrench Dip from most places. Not Marie Callender's though. I'm pretty sure their beef is pureed and reformed. It has bubbles in it, a weird texture and tastes weird. Baker's Square, on the other hand, is death city for me. Not only do they have better meat and rolls, but I often end up with one of their worst pies for my diabetes. I've stuck with sugar-free lately, but they've closed most of the Baker's Squares in my area, so it's only when I'm up to the longer drive and have enough money that I go there. -

-
Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 12:04 PMMmm... I love french dip sammiches. I make them using my crockpot.
A french dip sandwich is traditionally roast beef with au jus, which is made from the juices of the roast. When I make it in a crockpot the roast ends up shredded rather than sliced. Sooooo good. -
-
Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 12:14 PMSo, is it just a roast beef sandwich with some jus? What kind of bread is used? I'm still a bit confused! Is this an American thing or from somewhere else?
-
-
Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 2:12 PMits a plain Roast beef sandwich on a french roll, with just meat and bread. and you dip it into au jus, which is just beef broth pretty much -

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 2:38 PMhere's a picture: noteatingoutinny.com/wp-cont...crop.jpg
some places also serve it with cheese, but for the most part, it's just roast beef.

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 3:07 PMThanks! I get it now...so is a "french roll" usually just a slice of baguette like in the picture? (I love finding out what things are called in different countries :-) -

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 3:10 PMAnother delicious sandwich is sharp aged cheddar on a nutty bread with sliced figs....mmmmm. Good with goat cheese too but I prefer it with the cheddar.
Or, what I had yesterday which was one of my favorite soft cheeses (Boursin), with smoked salmon, asparagus and organic tomatoes on baguette. With some strawberries and fresh figs on the side. -

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 11:05 PMI cannot stand peanut butter and jelly! I don't know what's wrong with me but I really hate that combination. However, I once stumbled upon a peanut butter sandwich (due to an empty pantry) that I have come to absolutely love. Peanut butter, honey, canned jalepeno's and coconut flakes. OMG! It was just a late night experiment, but has since become a regular part of my diet.
Mmmm.....
Wondering what I have in my (again) sparse pantry right now.

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 4:55 AMKryssa - I've never liked the grape jelly thing myself (though as a child I was kinda hypnotized by those jars that had swirls of jelly in the peanut butter, or marshmallow!) but then in the part of the world I grew up in it was peanut butter and honey that was the kid sandwich staple, or peanut butter and sultanas (raisins in North American ;-)
You sandwich sounds quite delicious - kinda like a Thai version of peanut butter and honey!

Wed, October 10, 2007 - 2:14 PMPeanut butter (crunchy) and banana with a small drizzle of honey on toasted bread

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 2:42 PMI don't really like the PBJ sandwiches. I make them for my husband two or three times a week for lunch, and he never gets burned out on them. He'll get fed up with ham and cheese, tuna salad or egg salad, or any other kind, but he's been having PBJ for lunch for over a year now.
My mother in law likes PB and sweet bananas. When she told me I was like EWWWW!!!! LOL!!! -
-
Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Thu, October 11, 2007 - 5:11 AMElisa - PB or cashew butter with bananas on toast for breakfast is god! If you make it almond butter you're even topping up on nutritious substances that promote physical happiness (it's too early in the morning for me to remember the exact science but it's a fact ;-) -

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Thu, October 11, 2007 - 8:23 AMSynerGy - Nah, it's something specific with almonds and bananas...it has to do with serotonin production.
"Some natural means to stimulate the release of endorphin is by strenuous running, cycling, swimming,
and eating foods which contain the amino acid L-Phenylalanine such as almonds, bananas, cheese, lima
beans, peanuts, pumpkin seeds or sesame seeds."
Protein is a different thing, though turkey has its own special properties not shared by most meats since it's high in, if I remember correctly, tryptophan. -

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Thu, October 11, 2007 - 9:17 AMI read somewhere that you should never do the banana thing when you're camping, though. It had something to do with bananas having two chemicals that were the same as in blood, so it makes mosquitoes smell more blood in you, so you get bitten a lot more! -
-
Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Thu, October 11, 2007 - 9:22 AMTerri - Weird! Not that I can imagine anyone actually taking bananas on a camping trip since they're so prone to being squished and going bad!

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 4:49 PMRoast beef on a big roll with a bowl of au jus for dipping. Very messy because when you bite that big roll after dipping it, it's like squeezing a sponge and you have to bend over the plate or you'll get a chestful!

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 4:50 PMI think my ultimate sandwich would be bacon, avocado, cucumber, alfalfa sprouts, a nice creamy Havarti, and roasted peppers on a slice of nice crusty bread, with maybe some humus. YUM! I also absolutely love the after thanksgiving sandwiches. -
-
Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Sun, October 21, 2007 - 7:21 AMI had a great sandwich in a dive bar in New Orleans. Smoked turkey, avocado, bacon, tomato, and Havarti. I'll never forget it.

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 7:19 PMPork sandwich:
Baked, slow cooked or whatever you have at the moment. The crunchy skin is mmmmmmm. Sandwich has lettuce, ecuadorian style salsa (red onion, tomato and cilantro marinated in lime juice and salt), slices of pork and a couple of pieces of the crunchy skin, and sprinkled with the pork juice from the pan. Oh and hot aji sauce. MMMMMMMMMMMM (it's supposed to be yummy, not healthy, hence the pork skin). Everything inside afrench roll or similar, as long as it is white and crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. no dressings.
hubby loves this sandwich, but I don't do the skin since it's hard to find a piece of leg that's not turned into ham. Talk about ruining a perfect piece of baking pork. This sandwich is one of the staples of ecuadorian fast food, and can be found pretty much anywhere in my country. -

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 7:31 PMElisa - What's a "french roll"? I asked this before but I'm still not clear - in the photo of the au jus roast beef sandwich it seemed to be on a piece of baguette (you know, french bread that's long and skinny...but not super skinny, that's ficelle) not a roll of any kind. -
-
Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 7:40 PMOkay, I went to look for pictures and I'm *still* confused *lol* So, it appears it's supposed to be sort of like a baguette - or an American version of a baguette. -
-
Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 7:55 PMYeah something like a short baguette. I don't know if it is the american version of the baguette, I would think it's a little more delicate than a subway roll, but it works, it's the closest to the artisan white bread rolls they make in ecuadorian bakeries! Oh so light and fluffy in the inside and golden and crispy on the outside...mmmmmm I miss that kind of bread.........It took me a few hit and miss until I found the closest to the right bread for this particular sandwich.... -

"It's peanutbutter jelly time!
It's peanutbutter jelly time!
It's peanutbutter jelly time!"
Heh. That said, I do like thick slices of avocado and hummus with a tomato or two a reaaaaaally thinly sliced red onion...on a fresh hot cheese bagel -

Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 2:10 PMWe used to have avocado and bacon sandwiches on toasted rye bread about 35 years ago! I haven't done that in awhile, but it was good stuff!! My mom still did it for herself and my dad before they moved into a place where the meals were provided. -
-
Re: What's your favourite sandwich?
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 5:53 AMI've never had an avocado and bacon sandwich, but it sounds great!
Here's my most recent bit of heaven on bread:
thick sliced corned beef brisket and cole slaw (the non-creamy kind) on fresh soft rye bread. Yum!
I also love any sandwich on a length of baguette purchased from a parisian street vendor, I don't even care what it is.
And just this summer I discovered real black forest ham - not the kind you buy at the deli counter in the US but the real stuff from the actual Black Forest. O.M.G. It so goood! Like smoky prosciutto.
And on the healthy side, my local cafe has a number of homemade vegan organic pates made from things like sunflower seeds and walnuts and various spices, delicious on a sprouted grain bagel. -

Mo, that sounds pretty good, too.
As a kid growing up in North Carolina we had BBQ sandwiches with the cole slaw slathered right on the bun. Very messy but oh-so-delicious!
