spice container suggestions?

topic posted Thu, February 21, 2008 - 8:17 AM by  Palff
I'm looking for inexpensive, functional spice jars. Has anyone found a jar they love? The spices will behind a closed door on a hanging rack and out of sunlight, so glass would be fine. No more spices in little plastic bags from the coop. Thanks, Jim

OK, this is more of a tangent than an answer to your question, but just to pipe in on my new favorite spice storage technique - my husband got a vacuum sealer for the holidays, and we've been storing things like coffee, hops, loose tea, and larger quantities of herbs in vacuum sealed containers. I'm loving it! It keeps things so fresh.

When I shop for condiments like mustard, some of them come in really cool jars. Small and shapely. I reuse there for the bilk spices I buy and have a very interesting looking spice rack.

Better than Bouillon jars are perfect for recycling as spice jars. They're short & squat - great for scooping.

Spritz a little bleach into the lid to soak any leftover odor out of the silicone seal.

I like those glass containers that have an attached lid and rubber seal ("wire bale jars") like these:

Although the handle for the lid may not work for your storage space.

Also, when you clean out your older spices, recycle those great glass jars! I don't think anything works better for spice jars than, well, spice jars! ; )

You might also want to be more selective when buying other products, like condiments, pickles, pickled ginger, etc. and try to find some that are packaged in glass jars that can be reused for spice jars when you're done with the original contents.

Palff, the absolute best containers that I've ever found were at CostPlus Imports. They have a selection of steel with glass viewing port containers that would make the most OCD cooks quite proud. They're not too expensive (not exactly cheap, though). The other place I'd suggest is an art supply, like Michaels, for those really cool apothecary jars.

    Love and light, dear ones.

I use Ball jelly jars, the kind with the plastic snap lid, not the lid and ring type, they are about $7 a dozen, and most grocery stores or hardware stores sell them during canning season, If you can't find them you can get them online from Ball. They are much larger than ordinary spice jars though, so they take up lots more space, but I use a ton of spices so I buy in bulk and use up most stuff in about three months or less, especially things like cinnamon and cumin.

I find them separately at Cost Plus for .99 each. They are glass and have plastic tops. They come with the inner plastic lid with the holes for sprinkling, but I take those off, mainly because I get them every year to use for the holy water at our church at Theophany (Jan. 19). I put icons on the side and people take them home to use during the year.
