Which food dehydrator should I buy?

topic posted Mon, March 24, 2008 - 1:18 PM by  Stephanie
I'd like to buy my first dehydrator to make my own dried tomatoes, crackers and try out some raw recipes I have. Since it's my first time I wonder if anyone has any advice for me. So, if you had to do it all over again what dehydrator would you buy?

Thanks!

I have the same dehydrator as philip and it's a wonder! Easy to clean and does a great job. I've tried 2 other dehydrators (can't recall the names), the circular ones with the fan on the bottom and had problems with both of them. The feature that seems to make the difference is the placement of the fan. On the Excalibur model it's on the back.

    Steph,

I picked mine up on Amazon... after many years of using a lesser model or the oven, this thing is fantastic and totally worth the price... $65...
I make wonderful tomato chips with it as well as jerky and dried fruits.

If you're ever using it to make raw foods having accurate temperature control is key so it doesn't get to enzyme-killing heats. If you're not concerned with that, then whatever!

Does anyone have thoughts on round versus square dehydrators? I know I've read discussions before on the pros and cons of each, but can't remember what the conclusion was! (This was, in all likelihood, on a different tribe.) Thoughts?
